Lately it seems to be the in thing to have a cartoon style avatar of yourself. Many are using a service like Faceyourmanga which will create a free avatar based on a variety of physical features you can apply in order to attempt to get it as close as one can to look like themselves. I've seen some really great ones on Twitter.
If your artistic and have some skill with programs like photoshop you can create a very realistic cartoon or caricature of yourself. But if your in the same category I am, I recommend you try one of these sites that do it for you.

One of my favorite sites to have a custom caricature done is Fasticon. Very high quality results and you can choose between just a face shot or full body. Just noticed they now offer animated versions.
If you haven't guessed it yet, this is the same company I went with to create my avatar thats on the upper left corner of mytwittervers as well as the full body version. I was very pleased with the results. Downside was it took over a month to get the final image done. Not the fastest thats for sure.

CartoonMe is another one to look into. The price is amazingly inexpensive. A little over $5. As you can see from the results below, it came out pretty good. I received the the picture as a gif sized 320px X 240px. The examples in their photo library look very good. Site states turn around is about 48hrs. I received mine in about 24hrs.
